It’s not always frugal to go out and buy a can of this and that to make a meal, when with a few ingredients from your pantry and fridge, you can make your own homemade version.
- 1 lb of ground beef
- 1 8 oz. can of tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons of mustard (yellow)
- 2 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey
- a pinch of salt and pepper
Brown beef in a skillet. Once done, drain off any fat from the meat. Add meat back into the skillet and add the tomato sauce.
Once heated through, add the mustard, brown sugar, salt and pepper. At this point you can adjust the ingredients to meet your particular taste. Some might like this tangier or sweeter. Once its reached the desired taste you like, let it simmer for a few moments to combine the flavors throughout.
This will yield enough mixture for about six Sloppy Joe’s, on small burger buns. For less than a dollar per serving you have a cheap meal to feed your family.
