Homemade Baby Items

Today I am sharing several ways to save on the baby. If you have a little one, you know that baby care items can get expensive, and most of the time, you don’t know what’s actually in them. By making your own, you not only save a lot of money, you are only allowing the best to touch your baby’s skin. Don’t be put off by the “Make it yourself”. It’s much easier than you’d expect.

Bedtime lotion: (Apply after bedtime bath for a soothing effect)

  • 1 cup of petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
  • 9 teaspoons of olive oil
  • 15 drops of lavender oil
  • 15 drops of chamomile

Mix VERY well in a bowl. When mixture is blended, seal in an airtight container (You can find squeeze bottles in most stores).

Regular baby oil: (This is great for things like cradle cap, or any dry skin issues)

  • 2-3 Vitamin E capsules
  • 1 cup of almond OR olive oil

Mix together in a bowl. Put in a bottle or small spray bottle. The Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant and helps to heal wounds.

Make your own Baby-wipes

  • Heavy duty paper towels (I love the “Create A Size” ones)
  • 3 teaspoons baby wash
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup baby oil (optional)
  • Re-sealable container

In the container, add the warm water and baby wash. Mix slowly to avoid suds. Tear off each paper towel and put in a pile. I like to fold in half. With a sharp pair of scissors, cut the pile in half. Place the paper towels in the container with the water. Let it sit overnight. If a little more water is needed, that’s fine. In the morning, flip the stack of paper towels. This allows the entire stack to be moist. Ta-Da! You have baby wipes! 🙂 We noticed these worked better without any irritations.

Diaper Rash Cream

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mineral oil
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 teaspoons zinc oxide ointment
  • 3 teaspoons triple antibiotic ointment

Mix oil and cornstarch into a smooth paste. Add ointments and mix well. Place in container with lid. Store at room Temperature. Apply with cotton swab.

Bedtime Milk Baby Bath (Works like a charm to calm young children)

  • 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 1/2 cup whole dry buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 4 drop lavender oil

Mix together all the ingredients and store in a clean container or Ziploc bag. To use: 1-2 tablespoon for the baby’s bath.
