Three Odd Ways to Save Money

In my quest to save our family some money, I have come across a couple strange ways to save a buck or two.  I have not tried any of these, but I find them highly intriguing and may give them a shot sometime in the future.  Today’s experiment: Three Odd Ways to Save Money.

Odd #1
Save the liquid that is leftover from cooking vegetables. After you’ve steamed or boiled some vegetables, save that liquid in a jar instead of pouring it down the drain.  I’ve heard that vitamins from the vegetables leech out into the liquid which makes this brew healthy for you.  I don’t know whether that is true, but it could save you a little money if you use the liquid as a vegetable broth in soups or to cook rice.  Why not?

Why haven’t I done this yet?  Well, I’m just not sure how long that liquid will stay germ-free in my fridge.  Maybe a week?  This is something I foresee myself doing in the winter when we’ll be eating more soups.

Odd #2 Remove the pipe under your bathroom sink and put a bucket under it to collect the water. What do you do with this water?  Use you it to flush your toilet of course!  Just unhook the filler float inside your tank (yes, I googled that term to get it right).  This prevents the tank from filling up with water automatically.  When you need to go, pull out your bucket that is now full of water from washing hands and brushing teeth and dump it in the tank.

I find this idea FASCINATING, but my sweet hubby wasn’t as enthusiastic about the idea.  I think I’m only allowed a couple weird ways to save money at a time, and, considering I keep my deodorant in the refrigerator, I’d say I’m full up.

Odd #3 Go soap-free. Yes, that is what I said.  I stumbled upon this link this week, http://freetheanimal.com/2009/12/paleo-i-dont-care-i-like-no-soap-no-shampoo.html, and fell in love with the idea.  And that’s why my husband calls me a hippie.

I have not read up on this extensively, but this short article got my wheels turning.  What if I didn’t have to spend money on lotion, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, mousse, defrizzing gel?  Your skin soaks up everything you put on it, including all those nasty chemicals.  Do we really need all that product or is it just habit matched with commercialism and materialism?  It is going to gross my mom out to no end, but I am going to do this someday I tell you!

So there you have it.  Three weird ways to save money.  I am dying to know who is reading this and has already done these.
